Meta Tags are descriptions within the code of a web page that tells search engine spiders or robots what the page is supposed to be about. It is regarded as common knowledge in the search engine optimization community that the importance of Meta Tags (Description, Keywords, Alt Tags) have diminished significantly in the last year. Gone are the days when you could insert a page full of words into the Keyword Meta Tag and rank for all of those words. The one Meta Tag that still holds a good amount of weight with search engines is the Title Tag. A search engine robot will read the Title Tag and apply it to the rest of the page. If the page meets all of the requirements within the search engine algorithm (the equation each search engine uses to parse and categorize the quality of a page) the web page will then rank for the keywords within the Title Tag.
